Overview

Norfolk Island’s volcanic origins are evidenced by its rock pools, which were formed from lava beds and eroded lava tunnels. One such rock pool is Crystal Pool, which is located at Point Ross on the south-western end of the island.

Access to the area is difficult; the journey down is partly by rope. The island’s visitor information centre recommends that sightseers check the condition of the pools from the cliff top or check with a local guide before venturing down.

The stamps, designed by Sharon Rodziewicz of the Australia Post Design Studio, present Crystal Pool in both a calm and swell-filled state.

Stamp photographs are by Ian Rolfe of Southern Lightscapes and the minisheet photograph is by Matt Fieldes.

Stamps in this issue

Crystal Pool (waves)

On a calm, clear day, at low tide, Crystal Pool is a popular location for swimming and snorkelling, due to its crystal clear water and plentiful reef fish.

Crystal Pool (calm)

When conditions are rough, or during high tide, the pool is transformed by large swells and crashing waves, precluding recreational swimming and even washing some stingrays in from the ocean.
