Overview
This domestic and international rate issue features the official mammal emblems of four Australian states: Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
The mammal emblems from the remaining states and territories are included in a separate Mammal Emblems - Part One issue.
Stamps in this issue
Tasmanian Devil, Tas.
Tasmania proclaimed the Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) as its mammal emblem in 2015. Tasmanian Devil populations have been severely affected by facial tumour disease, and the carnivorous, nocturnal marsupials are now classified as endangered.
Leadbeater’s Possum, Vic.
The critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) became Victoria’s mammal emblem in 1971. Once feared extinct, this small possum lives in the great mountain ash forests of Victoria’s central highlands.
Numbat, WA
The Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) was declared Western Australia’s mammal emblem in 1973. Found across southern Australia at the time of European settlement, this endangered insectivorous marsupial is now confined to the south-west of Western Australia.
Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby, ACT
The Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) was named the mammal emblem of the Australian Capital Territory in 2018. These nimble marsupials live among rock piles and cliff lines along the Great Dividing Range. The distribution of the wallaby across its original range has declined significantly and the animal is now classified as vulnerable to extinction.
