Overview
Australia is home to some 36 species of raptors, or birds of prey. Our nocturnal raptors (active at night) are owls, while our diurnal raptors (active during the day) include a variety of eagles, hawks, kites, harriers and falcons. This stamp series features three diurnal raptors.
These powerful birds feed on a variety of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles and fish, and also scavenge for carrion, including road kill.
Generally endowed with keen eyesight, a broad wingspan and strong, sharp talons, diurnal raptors are skilled hunters, using various techniques to locate, pursue and seize their prey. Some fly low searching for creatures on the ground, some hover in open areas then drop on their victim, some hide in tree foliage before launching an ambush, while others glide then swoop on their unsuspecting meal. Raptors are apex predators that regulate the populations of smaller animals and can help farmers by catching mice and other pests.
