This stamp issue commemorates 150 years of one of the world’s greatest hospitals for children, The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne.

From its beginnings as the Melbourne Free Hospital for Sick Children, which opened its doors on 9 September 1870 with only six rooms, the RCH has continued the vision of its founders to provide the best care to sick and injured children, free of charge.

For 150 years, the RCH has provided exceptional care to millions of children, young people and their families; treatments and cures for childhood illness and disease have been discovered; new and innovative models of care have been pioneered; and education and training to the world’s brightest medical minds has been provided.

Today, RCH remains at the forefront of paediatric health, providing world-leading care for the sickest and most vulnerable children and their families, locally, nationally and internationally. The hospital’s anniversary recognises the extraordinary impact 150 years of caring has had on the children and communities of Victoria, Australia and beyond.
